I don't think we pinned down what interdisciplinarity is, but the
conversation made it pretty clear,
I think, that "interdisciplinarity"
is used in many different ways.
I came away from the conversation
thinking that "interdisciplinarity" is a flexible tool of institutions and is most interesting and productive when
pursued not as an end in and of itself, but for larger questions and pursuits.

As founder of the Senate's Academic Initiatives Commmittee, it was I who wrote the description of the Committee's charge (quoted above). However, rather than presume to define the term "academic imperative" several years later, I'm pleased to see an effort to determine its current meaning.

That said, I will offer this:

The word "imperative" was employed quite deliberately. There are countless interesting academic "initiatives" a Senate committee might pursue. In forming the Academic Initiatives Committee, it was my intention to establish a mission that set its sights beyond the pursuit of "interesting" initiatives, and upon those which foster meaningful advancement in the academic, intellectual, and programmatic quality of the Institute.

The foundation of a university is a worthwhile starting place for a an academic inititiatives committee. Particularly at Pratt Institute, within that foundation the committee will want to consider the place of art and design education in the modern university, which has its origins at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In fact, the nineteenth century concept of the institute could be a worthwhile topic of inquiry. What is the relationship between and insititute and a university? In what ways was the institute a university and in what ways was it distinct from a university?
